AI Didn't Just Arrive. It's Been Transforming Technical Training for Years.
Whenever someone finds out I work in technical education, one question almost always comes up:
"Are you using AI in technical training?"
My answer usually catches them off guard.
"Yes. I've been using it for the past four years."
That response almost always earns a puzzled look.
For many people, AI seems like it appeared overnight. One day there was ChatGPT, and suddenly everyone was talking about prompts, agents, and large language models.
But if you've been building learning experiences, AI has been quietly improving the way we create educational content for years.
AI Was Solving Real Problems Before It Became a Buzzword
One of the earliest ways I incorporated AI into my workflow was through AI-generated narration.
At first glance, it sounds like a small improvement. After all, it's just replacing a human voice with a synthetic one.
In reality, it completely changed how educational content could be maintained.
Before AI narration, updating a course could become surprisingly expensive.
Need to change one sentence?
You might have to recreate your entire recording setup. The same microphone. The same room. The same audio levels. The same speaking pace.
If someone else recorded the original audio, now you're coordinating schedules just to update a few seconds of narration.
A tiny product change could ripple into hours of production work.
Small Updates Became Small Again
AI removed that friction.
Now, updating a lesson is exactly what it should be: updating a lesson.
If terminology changes, I can revise it in minutes.
If a product feature is renamed, I don't have to schedule another recording session.
If I want to improve an explanation after receiving learner feedback, I can make the change immediately instead of adding it to a backlog for the next production cycle.
That means content stays current.
And in technical education, current content is good content.
Better Than Faster
Speed is the obvious benefit.
But it isn't the most interesting one.
What excites me more is the creative flexibility AI introduced.
For years, learners became accustomed to hearing the same style of narration regardless of the subject.
Every course sounded similar.
Every lesson carried the same energy.
Technical training doesn't have to feel that way.
Some topics deserve a calm, methodical explanation.
Others benefit from enthusiasm and momentum.
Different audiences respond to different presentation styles.
AI allows us to experiment with tone, pacing, and personality in ways that simply weren't practical before.
The goal isn't replacing instructors.
It's creating learning experiences that better match the content being taught.
AI Is Changing More Than Narration
Today, AI's role has expanded far beyond voice generation.
It helps create first drafts of technical documentation.
It accelerates curriculum design.
It generates practice exercises and assessment questions.
It reviews content for clarity and consistency.
It can even personalize explanations based on a learner's experience level.
Instead of spending hours creating the first version of content, educators can spend more time improving it.
That's a much better use of our expertise.
The Future Isn't About Replacing Educators
Whenever AI enters a conversation about education, there's often an underlying fear that technology will replace instructors or instructional designers.
I don't see it that way.
The best educational experiences still require people who understand how humans learn.
AI can generate content.
It cannot determine whether a learner truly understands a concept.
It doesn't know where learners struggle.
It doesn't know which analogy will finally make a difficult idea click.
Those decisions still belong to experienced educators.
Looking Ahead
The pace of AI innovation is accelerating, and we're only beginning to understand what it means for learning.
I don't think the most important question is whether AI belongs in technical training.
That question has already been answered.
The more interesting question is this:
What does exceptional education look like when AI handles the repetitive work and educators can focus entirely on creating meaningful learning experiences?
That's the future I'm excited to help build.
